Underlying Targets of Initial Glides -- Evidence from Focus-Related F_0 Alignments in English
نویسنده
چکیده
In connected speech, initial glides such as /j/ and /w/ often manifest hardly any steady-state formant patterns. In this paper, however, we report data suggesting that, despite their rapid formant movements, glides might have underlyingly static targets. The evidence was revealed when we attempted to determine syllable boundaries involving initial glides as well as the retroflex, using focus-related F0 alignment in syllables with initial nasals as reference. In addition to finding that the likely onset of a glide or retroflex is much earlier than what is acoustically the most obvious, i.e., the point where formants reach their extremes, we also found that the location of those extreme points was in fact sequentially analogous to the point of nasal release. With this alignment pattern, the entire interval of a glide seemed to consist of a formant trajectory toward a horizontal asymptote, suggesting a static rather than dynamic target.

Acquisition of English Relative Clauses by Adult Persian Learners: Focus on Resumptive Pronouns
Tsimpli and Dimitrakopoulou (2007) observed that uninterpretable features are unavailable in second language (L2) acquisition after the critical period. In this paper, we verify this claim by providing evidence from Persian speaking learners of English as an L2 on the status of resumptive pronouns (RPs) as uniterpretable features. Unlike English which does not allow RPs, Persian shows various b...
متن کاملDetermining the temporal interval of segments with the help of F0 contours
The temporal interval of a segment such as a vowel or a consonant, which is essential for understanding coarticulation, is conventionally, though largely implicitly, defined as the time period during which the most characteristic acoustic patterns of the segment are to be found. We report here evidence for a need to reconsider this kind of definition. In two experiments, we compared the relativ...
متن کاملOn the Validation of a Preliminary Model of Reading Strategy Using SEM: Evidence From Iranian ELT Postgraduate Students
The present study was an attempt to refine a qualitatively proposed model of ELT discipline-specific reading strategies to provide a better interpretation of qualitative findings. Hence, in line with the components of the previous model, that is, 6 factors and 32 categories, a 6-hypothetical factor and a 33-item questionnaire were considered in the design of the ELT discipline-specific question...
متن کاملSimple Syllable Structure and English Pre-nucleus Glides
The purpose of this paper is to test whether the Simple Syllable Structure (SSS) proposed by Duanmu (1990:[2]) is true of English onsets or not. If the SSS holds for English onset, English onglides should be secondary articulations on the onset consonant rather than separate sounds. We will test this by measuring the duration of the initial consonant –glide combination, to determine whether it ...
متن کاملAcoustic characterization of the glides /j/ and /w/ in American English
Acoustic analyses were conducted to identify the characteristics that differentiate the glides /j,w/ from adjacent vowels. These analyses were performed on a recorded database of intervocalic glides, produced naturally by two male and two female speakers in controlled vocalic and prosodic contexts. Glides were found to differ significantly from adjacent vowels through RMS amplitude reduction, f...
